Guitar - Exams

For experienced students who are working towards exams.

Useful Apps

Find them in your App Store.

Guitar Tuna - This is an excellent tuning app for Guitar, Ukulele and Bass with games to test your knowledge of chords too. See if you can beat my score!

DoReMiNotas - Practise reading music in this game. Choose treble clef, select how many different notes to test yourself on and see if you can beat your own score. Tell me how well you do! Just because we use TAB most of the time, don't shy away from this challenge.

Guitar Chords 3D - can you play along with this app? You can change the speed (using the slide at the bottom right) and the difficulty of the strumming pattern (with the hands on the left of the screen). You should know most if not all these chords. See if you can learn a new one.

Blues and Solos

If you want to try something completely new, then begin by learning this Minor Pentatonic Scale shape. In Debut Grade, we played the lower part of this scale: 03 02 02. As it moves along the neck to new positions this now has to become  14 13 13 - can you see why? It's like a capo is moving up the neck with you. Memorise the full Minor Pentatonic Scale: 14 13 13 13 14 14.

Try this recommended site below. This musician explains it really well and shows you how to use the scale for a solo. He is working at the 5th Fret and just using his imagination with the Minor Pentatonic Scale shape.

Here are a few great backing tracks to try playing your Pentatonic ideas over.    Be brave and have fun.
